Ten Sure-Fire Tips for Avoiding Plaque

!±8± Ten Sure-Fire Tips for Avoiding Plaque

We can all use some foolproof tips for avoiding plaque. Plaque is an aggregation of harmful bacteria that collects on our teeth and gums, showing up as a fuzzy, whitish coating near the gum line. If plaque is allowed to build up and isn't removed on a regular basis, it inevitably leads to tooth decay and gum disease.

So that said, here are ten surefire tips to avoid plaque build-up and enjoy a fresher, healthier mouth.

1. Brush at least twice a day to avoid plaque.

Use a small, circular motion and be sure to brush each individual tooth on all sides. Pay special attention to back teeth which may be harder to reach. Make a difficult job easier with one of the new electric or battery-powered toothbrushes, and brush for a full 30 seconds ... not just until your mouth fills up with foam, a common mistake.

2. Avoid more plaque by brushing your gums.

Using a soft tooth brush, gently brush your gums as well as your teeth to avoid plaque. Hint: Lift your lips from your gums in order to better reach plaque collecting in the crevices. For super-powered gum cleaning, use one of the water picks or oral irrigators available on the market.

3. Don't forget to brush your tongue to help avoid plaque and bad breath.

The tongue is simply filled with tiny crevices where plaque and bacteria collect. Although brushing your tongue may feel odd at first, neglecting to do so may leave as much as 50% of the bacterial-causing plaque still in your mouth.

4. Floss daily to avoid plaque build-up between teeth.

Your tooth brush simply can't reach all the plaque between your teeth, so flossing is necessary to avoid plaque build-up.

5. Avoid between-meal snacks, since sugar feeds the bacteria that causes plaque.

Bacterial does its worst damage within about ten minutes after a meal or snack. Most people don't brush after every snack -- and "sugar" comes in the form of foods like fruit (fructose) and milk (lactose), not just candy and soda.

6. Drinking water washes bacteria from your mouth, helping to avoid plaque.

Drink plenty of water after a meal or a snack, swishing it around a bit, and you've improved your odds against oral bacterial already.

Want to test your brushing technique and learn how to better avoid plaque? Try this:

1. Add a few drops of food coloring to a small amount of water.

2. Brush your teeth as you normally would, then rinse your mouth with the colored water.

3. Now look for the areas where food coloring still clings to your teeth, tongue and gums. The food coloring has colored all the plaque you missed!

4. Brush again to remove all the colored areas. Next time you brush, you'll be more aware of your problem areas and better avoid plaque build-up.

As you can see, there are a number of tips sure to aid you in the fight against plaque. Adding just one or two at a time to your dental routine is sure to improve your odds against plaque -- and your oral health.

Top Ten Oral Irrigators

!±8± Top Ten Oral Irrigators

Adding an oral irrigator to your daily brushing and flossing routine will help you keep your mouth clean and your gums healthy. Oral irrigators work by shooting a focused stream of water between your teeth and along your gums, effectively removing trapped debris, bacteria, and plaque below the gum line.

Whether your dental hygienist has suggested an oral irrigator because of braces, gum disease, diabetes, or because flossing is difficult, or you simply want to improve your oral hygiene, any one of the ten irrigators reviewed here would be a good choice.

1. Waterpik WP-100W Ultra Dental Water Jet. The feature-rich Waterpik Ultra tops the list in terms of performance and affordability. Its delivers an adjustable 10 to 90 PSI and 1200 pulses per minute. Included in the box are six tips, including a "Pik Pocket" for ultra deep cleaning and an orthodontic tip that's great for braces. The unit's attractive and sanitary design means you won't mind leaving it on your bathroom counter.

2. Interplak WJ6R/WJ6RW Dental Water Jet. Safe and effective for every member of the family, the Interplak has a hinged reservoir with a handle for easy refilling, four water jet tips, and a long three-foot hose for increased maneuverability. The cord stores neatly under the unit.

3. Waterpik WP-450 Ultra Cordless Dental Water Jet. This handheld, rechargeable unit has dual pressure control so you can choose between gentle or deep cleaning. Comes with a jet tip, "Pik Pocket" tip, orthodontic tip, and tongue cleaner.

4. WaterPik WP-65 Personal Dental Water Jet. The Waterpik WP-54 has a compact and attractive design which features a cover that doubles as the unit's water reservoir. Its single jet tip delivers a pulsating stream to even hard to reach places. One drawback is that the unit requires some manual priming, and can be loud if used when others are sleeping nearby.

5. WaterPik WP-60W Personal Dental Water Jet System. The Waterpik WP60 delivers 1200 pulses per minute for deep, thorough cleaning between teeth and below the gum line. A pressure control button lets you adjust the power of the stream. Comes with a single jet tip and a tongue cleaner.

6. Waterpik WP-70/WP-70W Family Dental Water Jet. With two color-coded jet tips and two tongue cleaners, the Waterpik WP-70 is a good choice for families. Features a frosted 1000ml reservoir with level gauge. One drawback is that the unit is fairly noisy.

7. Interplak WJ2CS Compact Rechargeable Water Jet. The Interplak Compact Rechargeable lives up to its name with its handheld design and on-unit reservoir that holds enough water for one minute of cleaning at a time. Its size makes it easy to store and a great choice for travel, but water pressure could be stronger.

8. Waterpik WP-360W Hand-held Cordless Rechargeable Dental Water Jet. This hand-held unit includes two heads with different diameters so you can choose between a gentle or more powerful stream. The compact design makes it easy to hold and portable. It's also waterproof so you can use it in the shower. The reservoir is small though, and may need to be refilled a few times during each use.

9. Conair WJ3CS Interplak Dental Water Jet. Conair's WJC3S has a small footprint and an attractive design that complement its good performance and affordable price. The reservoir is easy to fill, and you can choose between high and low water pressure. The unit is cordless and requires three triple A batteries. As the batteries drain, water pressure decreases.

10. Oral B ProfessionalCare 8900 DLX OxyJet Oral Care Center. This full-featured oral care unit includes both an electric toothbrush and an oral irrigator. If you're in the market for both, the 8900 will save you the extra money and space you'd otherwise devote to two separate appliances. What's unique about this oral irrigator is that it mixes air with water to produce bubbles that leave your teeth and gums free of plaque and bacteria.

Wanted: The Best Toothbrush for Whitening Our Teeth

!±8± Wanted: The Best Toothbrush for Whitening Our Teeth

Do you believe in "love at first smile?" You read it right, I'm not talking about the love at first sight stuff because they are already common, what I'm referring to is the different feelings that strikes you every time you see someone smile with perfectly white teeth. Then all of a sudden, it makes you realize and that you can achieve that beautiful smile and those white teeth too. Fortunately, you do not have to go too far because what can help you to achieve that beautiful smile can be found inside your home, which is your toothbrush. You just have to be sure you are using the best toothbrush, since not all toothbrushes are created equal.

What is the connection of using the best toothbrush for having beautiful smiles? The answer is simple, since a beautiful smile and those white teeth go together. One cannot have a beautiful smile if he does not have perfect white teeth. In addition, how do we get those perfect white teeth? Simply by brushing our teeth, but brushing alone even on a regular basis will not be a guarantee to whiten your teeth. There are many of those who religiously brush their teeth and still do not get the expected result, whiter teeth. It is because it has something to do with the toothbrush they use and the way they brush their teeth. These two are very vital in producing white teeth.

Choosing the right toothbrush is the most important thing to do. You can choose from different variations of toothbrush that the market offers and even on the Internet, from manual ones to the electric toothbrush. Nevertheless, when it comes to effective brushing, I would prefer the electric toothbrush because of the different features it has which the manual one does not have. In choosing your toothbrush, you must give priority to its head size, bristle stiffness and its shape. You must be sure that your brush is capable of reaching all your teeth even those located at the back. A minimum of 2 minutes is required in effective brushing, good thing this electric toothbrush is equipped with a special timer that beeps every 2 minutes. In this way, you can be sure you are doing a good job in whitening your teeth.

How you brush your teeth also contributes to teeth whitening. One good quality of a toothbrush is that its handle is extremely comfortable to you. You should have control on your toothbrush while you are brushing, resulting in a brush stroke that is firm but not a forceful one. For a complete and thorough brushing, it is recommended to use circular movements when brushing. This way, all the dirt and stains will be removed and will be swiped away by your toothbrush. The more stains and dirt removed, the closer you get to your goal of whitening your teeth.

Whitening one's teeth is not that hard to accomplish but it really requires determination and pure discipline, and patience of course. You will not achieve it in just an overnight brushing. There is no such thing, but you can start using these electric toothbrushes now. Although it will cost you more than the regular brushes, it can guarantee you an effective way of brushing that will result in whitening your teeth. Choosing the best among these toothbrushes is not that hard because there are only three of them competing in that category. They are the Philips SoniCare Flexcare, Oral B Triumph 9900 series, and Ultreo Ultrasound. These toothbrushes are worth their prices because they are guaranteed to perform to its standard.

Today's generation is very fortunate to enjoy the benefits of what technology can give them. Gone were the days that many of our questions cannot find their answers. Here and now, you had found yours.
